1. Install the firmware
Option A: Web installer (recommended, no development environment needed)
- Open the web installer (Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge only, because of WebSerial).
- Connect the ESP32-S3 via USB-C and follow the instructions.
- Careful with the "erase device" dialog: if ticked, the installer erases the whole flash, including all settings and the Wi-Fi password. Do not tick it when you only want to reinstall without losing data.
Option B: Arduino IDE – see Development. After that, everything else works through updates over Wi-Fi (no more USB needed).
2. First setup
- The device starts with touch calibration: tap the 4 crosshairs one after another. Afterwards the cube opens its own Wi-Fi "WetterCubePlus-Setup".
- On your smartphone (or PC) open the Wi-Fi settings, look for "WetterCubePlus-Setup" in the list of available networks and connect to it. If the phone says that the network has no internet access, stay connected anyway.
- The browser now opens the cube's setup portal by itself. If that does not happen, open
http://192.168.4.1in the browser. - In the portal enter the credentials of your home Wi-Fi (choose the network, enter the password).
- Enter your location without umlauts (
Muncheninstead ofMünchen,Kolninstead ofKöln,Dusseldorfinstead ofDüsseldorf). - Choose your DWD region / federal state (also used for the radar map).
- Save. The cube restarts and connects to your home Wi-Fi. Afterwards connect your phone to your normal Wi-Fi again (this usually happens by itself).
Afterwards the cube is reachable at http://wettercubeplus.local or the IP address shown on the display.
Re-calibrate touch
Hold a finger on the display while powering on until "Neukalibrierung" appears, then let go.
If the Wi-Fi connection fails at startup
At startup the cube tries twice (15 seconds each). If that fails it shows the setup mode ("WLAN-Verbindung fehlgeschlagen"). The saved credentials are kept, and the cube automatically retries every 60 seconds and restarts on success. When in doubt, read /log (in setup mode at http://192.168.4.1/log).
