Fusion/Updates (OTA)/en

Aus WetterCube Wiki
Dies ist die englische Fassung. Zur deutschen Fassung

The device updates itself over Wi-Fi (OTA, "over the air") without a USB cable. The new firmware is downloaded from GitHub Pages.

Automatic check and update icon

  • Two minutes after start and then every 6 hours the device checks whether a newer version has been released (after an error it retries after 1 hour).
  • If there is one, an orange update icon appears at the top left of the main screen. It stays until the update has been installed.
  • Version numbers are compared: an older or identical published version triggers nothing.

Installing an update

  • On the display: tap the icon, check the versions, choose "Jetzt installieren" (install now). "Später" (later) closes the window.
  • Via browser: web interface → Firmware-Update → "Auf Updates prüfen" → "Jetzt installieren".
  • During installation the display shows a progress bar. Do not disconnect the device from power; it restarts by itself afterwards (about 1 minute).
  • The picture keeps running calmly during the update (flash-safe display driver); the display shows a progress bar.
  • If the update fails (e.g. no internet), the display briefly shows the error and the device keeps running the old version.

Settings and Wi-Fi data are kept across an update.

Switching updates on and off

In the web interface under System → Firmware update you choose how the device handles updates:

Choice Behaviour
Notice on the display and in the web interface (default) As described above: the device checks by itself, a new update shows up as an icon on the main screen and in the web interface.
Web interface only The device keeps checking but shows no update icon on the display. You only see the new version in the web interface and install it there.
Off The device no longer asks for new versions, shows no notice and installs nothing from GitHub.

Below that you choose how often the device asks for new versions: every 1, 6 (default) or 24 hours. The web interface also shows when it last checked and when the next check is due. After saving, the device checks again after about 20 seconds.

Important with "Off": Then no security updates arrive either. You have to keep the firmware up to date yourself by downloading the new firmware.bin from the releases and installing it as a file in the web interface (see below). Installing from a file is always possible. When you switch to "Off", the web interface asks for confirmation first. The setting is included in the settings backup. The system information on the display then says "Updates aus" (updates off).

Firmware from a file and rollback

  • In the web interface (tab System) a firmware.bin can be uploaded, for example for a test version or when the update check finds nothing. The file is checked before writing.
  • Every new firmware first runs on probation: only after 60 seconds of healthy operation it counts as valid. If it does not start or the power is pulled, the previous version runs automatically after the next restart ("Update zurückgenommen"). More in Recovery.

Notes

  • After a release, GitHub Pages sometimes needs a few minutes to serve the new firmware. On a download error, wait a moment and try again.
  • The device only offers newer versions. Going back to an older version requires publishing a new, higher version containing the old state.

Emergency: reinstall the firmware via USB

If the device no longer starts at all (e.g. because it was disconnected from power during an update), the firmware can be reinstalled via USB with the web installer again. The installation erases the flash, including settings and Wi-Fi data.
