1. Install the firmware

Waveshare boards only: The web installer and the firmware are meant for the Waveshare ESP32-P4-WIFI6-Touch-LCD-7B and the Waveshare ESP32-S3-Touch-LCD-7B. Other boards are not supported and can cause problems.

The firmware is installed with the web installer, straight from the browser and without a development environment:

  1. Open the web installer (Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge only, because of WebSerial).
  2. Connect the board with a USB-C data cable at the port labelled UART ("USB TO UART", on the P4 board as on the S3 board), choose "Install" and follow the instructions. If the board is not detected: hold the BOOT button while you plug in the cable or press RESET, then release it.
  3. Careful: the installation erases the flash, including settings and the Wi-Fi password. If you want to keep them, back up your settings in the web interface first (see Settings).

After that, everything else works through updates over Wi-Fi (no more USB needed). If you want to build the firmware yourself, see Development.

2. First setup

  1. On first start (or if the Wi-Fi is unreachable) the display shows a hint. The cube now opens its own Wi-Fi "WetterCube-Fusion-Setup".
  2. On your phone (or PC) open the Wi-Fi settings, look for "WetterCube-Fusion-Setup" in the list of available networks and connect to it. If the phone says that the network has no internet access, stay connected anyway.
  3. The browser now opens the cube's setup portal by itself. If that does not happen, open http://192.168.4.1 in the browser.
  4. In the portal enter the credentials of your home Wi-Fi (choose the network, enter the password).
  5. Enter your location (city) without umlauts (Munchen, Koln).
  6. Choose your DWD region / federal state (used for pollen forecast and warnings).
  7. Save. The cube restarts, connects to your home Wi-Fi and loads the data. Afterwards connect your phone to your normal Wi-Fi again (this usually happens by itself).

Afterwards the device is reachable at http://wettercube-fusion.local.

If the Wi-Fi connection fails at startup

At startup the device tries twice. If that fails it shows the setup mode. The saved credentials are kept, and the device then automatically retries regularly. When in doubt, read /log (in setup mode at http://192.168.4.1/log).
