Fusion/Hardware/en
Note: WetterCube is a software project. You buy the board yourself and design or print a case to your own taste; I try to offer matching cases.
Waveshare boards only: The software is only reliably supported on exactly these boards (see below). Combined boards with a display often differ from vendor to vendor in display, touch or connectors; other boards are not supported and can cause problems. As soon as more boards are available, board-specific versions are to be offered in the long term; there is no fixed date yet.
Fusion needs no wiring: display, touch and backlight control are built onto the board. This is deliberate: complete boards with an integrated display make building easy even for people who know nothing about building and wiring up an ESP32 and the like. If you do not want to crimp and solder, the Fusion is the right choice; WetterCube and WetterCubePlus, by contrast, require crimping and soldering.
Target board: Waveshare ESP32-P4-WIFI6-Touch-LCD-7B
| Component | Type |
|---|---|
| Main processor | ESP32-P4 (RISC-V, two fast cores plus one low-power core), 32 MB PSRAM in the package, 32 MB flash |
| Wi-Fi/Bluetooth | ESP32-C6 as a co-processor (Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5 LE), connected via ESP-Hosted/esp_wifi_remote
|
| Display | 7" IPS, 1024×600, MIPI-DSI |
| Touch | capacitive, 5 points |
| More | USB 2.0 OTG, SDIO 3.0 TF card slot, microphones, speaker header, RTC battery, 2×12 GPIO header, RS485, CAN, I²C, UART, MIPI-CSI |
Status: this is the main board and arrives in a few days. The code is prepared for it (board layer, build, recovery app) but has not run on the board yet; until then development happens on the S3. The S3 state (0.9.9-alpha7) then stays as a backup with small fixes.
Development board: Waveshare ESP32-S3-Touch-LCD-7B
| Component | Type |
|---|---|
| Microcontroller | ESP32-S3, 16 MB flash, 8 MB OPI PSRAM |
| Display | 7", 1024×600, 16-bit RGB interface |
| Touch | GT911 (I²C), capacitive |
| Backlight | PWM through an I²C IO expander |
Power supply
Via USB-C at the port labelled UART ("USB TO UART"). Because of the display, the backlight and the current peaks when transmitting over Wi-Fi, a power supply of at least 5 V / 2 A and a short, thick cable are recommended. A weak supply or cable can cause Wi-Fi failures or a brownout reset (see Diagnostics).
Notes
- Flashing and log: Both boards have several USB ports. For flashing (web installer) and for the serial monitor output (115200 baud, usually
/dev/cu.usbmodem…on a Mac) use the port labelled UART ("USB TO UART"). If the board is not detected, hold the BOOT button while you plug in the cable or press RESET, then release it (download mode). - Because of memory bandwidth the S3 draws with partial rendering (see Development); on the P4 with a DSI framebuffer and 32 MB PSRAM this is expected to be unnecessary.
