Reading /log
Since v1.9.0 the cube keeps a small log in memory (the last 25 entries, newest first; empty after a restart). It can be opened in the browser:
- in normal operation:
http://wettercube.local/log(also via "Log ansehen" in the firmware card of the web interface) - in setup mode (phone on the "WetterCube-Setup" network):
http://192.168.4.1/log
| Header line | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Version | installed firmware |
| Freier Heap | free RAM: current, lowest since start and largest contiguous block. HTTPS needs about 40–50 KB in one piece |
| LVGL-Speicher | free memory in the LVGL pool (96 KB) |
| Uptime | minutes since start |
| Letzter Neustart | power connected, software restart (e.g. after an update), crash, watchdog or brownout |
| WLAN beim Start | duration and signal strength, or the failure reason (e.g. "network not found", "authentication failed") |
| WLAN jetzt | network, signal strength and IP address |
| Standort | city with coordinates (0.0000 means: not found yet) |
| Letzter Wetter-/Pollen-Abruf OK | how long ago the last successful request was |
Below are the events with time (or seconds since start while the clock is not yet synchronized):

Serial monitor
All log messages also appear in the serial monitor. It helps when the cube is not reachable: connect the cube via USB-C, open the Serial Monitor in the Arduino IDE and set 115200 baud. The cube needs USB CDC On Boot: Enabled for this (the published firmwares are built that way). After opening it, restart the cube once (reset button or replug USB) so the messages are visible from startup.
Common problems
| Problem | Cause and remedy |
|---|---|
| The cube shows "Portal: WetterCube-Setup" although Wi-Fi was set up | The Wi-Fi was unreachable for 15 seconds at startup (router off, wrong password, 5 GHz only network). The ESP32-C3 supports 2.4 GHz only. The reason is in /log (at http://192.168.4.1/log) under "WLAN beim Start". The credentials stay saved; after 3 minutes the cube restarts and tries again. Alternatively enter them again in the portal
|
| Dropouts, restarts | Does /log say "Letzter Neustart: BROWNOUT"? Then use a different power supply and a short cable
|
| City is not found | Leave out umlauts (Munchen, Koln), check the name. City names with spaces ("Bad Schwartau") work since v1.7.3. The [Geo] entry in the log gives the reason
|
| Wrong time / night mode does not kick in | The time comes via NTP and needs internet. Check in /log that Wi-Fi is connected
|
| All values show "--" or 0 | The first weather request runs right after startup. Look for [Wetter] in /log. On HTTP -1 check internet and router; with very low heap restart the cube
|
| Weather values do not update | The header of /log shows when the last request succeeded. Failures appear with their reason in the entries
|
| Air quality always green | Fixed in v1.8.2 (JSON buffer too small). If you still run an older version, update via OTA |
| Pollen shows "Keine" everywhere | Outside the pollen season or outside Europe Open-Meteo provides no pollen data |
Web interface at wettercube.local not reachable |
mDNS is not supported on every network/device (older Windows needs Bonjour). Use the IP address from the boot screen instead (visible for 5 seconds, again after a restart) or look it up in your router |
| Update aborts with "download error" | GitHub Pages sometimes serves the new firmware only after a few minutes. Wait a moment and retry |
| Update: "begin failed" | The cube has no partition table with two app slots. Reinstall once via USB or the web installer |
| After the update the cube asks for Wi-Fi again | Settings live in NVS and normally survive an update. If the partition table was changed or the flash was erased (the web installer erases it), set it up again |
| Display stays black | night mode active (a button press wakes it for 15 s) or brightness too low. If that does not help, check the wiring as in Hardware |
| Display shows wrong colors | LV_COLOR_16_SWAP must be 0 (see Development)
|
| Sketch too big (when building yourself) | choose the Custom partition scheme (see Development) |
